Mama, I see you.
I see how fiercely you love your kids.
I see you pour your heart into carving a space for them in the world every day. In a simple and natural expression of your undying love you create a home that inspires and nurtures them.
Now here’s a question, and prepare to dig deep and answer bravely:
Have you done the same for yourself?
Does your home inspire and nurture YOU? Is there a place where you go to recharge, practice self-care, and intentionally explore self-love?
For the mom who selflessly and completely loves her kids so fiercely – It is too easy to lose yourself. So to you, I say this:
You need this more than anyone in the world
You need a place, maybe it’s just a little spot in the corner of your bedroom, maybe it’s a whole room for yourself. But carve out a space that is just for you. Make it comfy and cozy, but most importantly make it YOU.
So I give to you… Mama’s self-care corner
Let me tell you about my self-care corner, my place in the world that is mine, ALL mine. I’ll tell you how I set it up, what I keep there, how I use it, and I’ll share a little secret about it.
Mine… My place is a corner in my bedroom. Free of distractions and reminders of #momlife, a spot out of the way but still central enough that I pass by it constantly. Separate but still connected, inviting me to step out of the every-day crazy into to a world that inspires and nurtures ME.
Yours… Keep it simple: Just a chair, small table, lamp, art that speaks to you, and a basket that organizes anything small that you need: phone charger, pretty pens, my journal, and a therapy ball. On a table or tray, a tray for candles, water, and tea. Nearby maybe foam roller, therapy ball, or a theracane. Neat and clutter-free to cultivate the feeling of tranquility.
Make it be a place that beckons you. Mine is filled with things that allow me to care for my body, mind, and spirit. This is most often where I practice my foam rolling, self-massage, or stretching I need that day. I journal here, while drinking tea, lighting a candle, and listening to music.
The honest truth…
Now, I’d like to say that I use my corner in the morning, once or twice throughout the day, and before I go to bed. But here’s the secret: I’m still working on carving a space in the world out just for me, still trying to figure out how to inspire and nurture myself half as much as I do my kids and the other people in my life.
I certainly don’t have it all figured out. BUT I’m getting closer. Progress, not perfection, sweet mama.
Every day I ask myself one simple question: how can I prioritize me: today, in this moment, this year. I’m still learning how to grant myself permission to choose me, to care for myself so that I may better care for my family.
I do know one thing… If we don’t intentionally carve out time and space for ourselves, IT WILL NOT happen. Sweet mama, it just won’t happen.
You have to MAKE it happen
We will continue to get brushed aside and miss opportunities to take care of our own bodies and nurture our own hearts and minds.
AND here’s the thing… If we are not nurturing and inspiring ourselves, we cannot truly show up for others. SelfLESSness is not only not sustainable, it is ultimately not empowering.
And your kids are watching, always learning from your modeling. Watching their mother sacrifice herself does them a profound disservice. They miss opportunities to learn powerful self-love lessons. So instead….
Let’s model true self-care, self-acceptance, and self-love
One beautiful and sustainable way of doing that is by intentionally carving out a space to easily, conveniently, and consistently prioritize yourself. Even if for only 5-10 minutes a night before getting into bed.
You ARE worth it. Just because.
Try it and share your experience! I’d love to see photos of your own self-care corner!
